More than 8,000 deaths from COVID-19 were reported worldwide on Oct. 3.

Data available on the World Health Organization’s website shows 8,679 deaths were reported globally in the past 24 hours, the highest one-day increase since August.

There were also 320,527 new COVID-19 cases reported globally in the past 24 hours, with India, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, France, and Spain registering the highest numbers of new cases.

Driving the high death toll was Argentina, which recorded 3,351 deaths in the past 24 hours, the highest one-day total ever recorded in the country.

However, according to the Buenos Aires Times, the high number is due to a backlog in reporting, explaining that thousands of deaths had “not been uploaded” onto the country’s National Health Surveillance System.

India’s death toll surpassed 100,000 after the country reported 1,069 deaths in the past 24 hours, the second-highest of any nation.

The United States recorded nearly 900 new deaths, followed by Brazil, which reported just under 730 deaths, and Mexico, which recorded slightly more than 430 deaths.

Colombia, Iran, Russia, France, Indonesia and Spain all reported more than 100 new deaths on Saturday.

According to WHO, a total of 10,017 deaths reported worldwide on Aug. 15, making it the second-highest death toll ever recorded in one day.

The highest number of deaths ever reported in a 24 hour period was 12,434 on April 17.
