Nearly a foot of water pooled on Stanley Avenue in Fernwood after a water main burst Thursday, May 19, 2022.

Firefighters and City of Victoria public works crews responded after a water main burst on a Fernwood street Thursday, flooding a road and spilling over into at least two homes.

Crews were called to Stanley Avenue near Begbie Street at around 6:30 p.m. for a report that a main had broken.

They arrived to a cascade of water about a foot deep flowing down the middle of the street and onto some adjacent properties, according to Deputy Victoria Fire Chief Dan Atkinson.

Victoria Fire Department deployed five different apparatus and 13 members, who were on scene until about 11 p.m. managing the flow of water and sump-pumping water from two basements.

Water was turned off in the neighbourhood for several hours but was restored Thursday night.

The City of Victoria says public works crews were performing prep work in the area at the time, but it doesn’t appear that those crews or contractors struck the main.

Crews were still conducting a detailed inspection of the main Friday but have not yet identified the cause of the burst main, which occurred at a pipe junction.

The pipe had been fixed as of Friday morning and workers are continuing to assist and support homeowners who may have seen damage due to pooling, according to the city.
