Two people were rescued while a third person is missing after a fishing vessel capsized on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

At around 8:45 p.m. Thursday, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre received reports that a 27-foot private fishing vessel with people on board had capsized at the mouth of Nitinat Narrows.

One survivor was recovered by Canadian Coast Guard Fast Recovery Craft, Bamfield 1, while a second survivor was spotted in by a US Coast Guard helicopter based out of Port Angeles and recovered by the Canadian Coast Guard vessel Atlantic Eagle.

Both survivors were transferred to BC EHS in Port Renfrew.

However, one remains missing and a search is being conducted by Parks Canada and RCMP Air 8 helicopter to locate him.

“The two survivors that were located by the Coast Guard were initially taken to Port Renfrew, and then transported to a larger center for further medical treatment. said Sgt. Chris Manseau, media relations officer for the BC RCMP. “The Lake Cowichan RCMP continue to liaise with their Search and Rescue partners who continue searching for the missing man.”

Nitinat Narrows is located roughly 35 kilometres northwest of Port Renfrew.

Anyone who may have information on this incident, or saw the boat earlier on May 19 to contact the Lake Cowichan RCMP detachment at 250-749-6668.
