Province adjusts road closure times on Highway 4
BC Government
The provincial government says starting on Jan. 5 the weekday four-hour road closure window on Highway 4 at Kennedy Hill will be adjusted.

Closure times along the only road between Tofino and Port Alberni have been adjusted, according to the provincial government.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said in a press release that starting on Jan. 5 the weekday four-hour road closure window on Highway 4 at Kennedy Hill will move to 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in order to better accommodate motorists.

The closures are due to ongoing improvements on a 1.5-kilometre stretch of Highway 4 that include widening, paved shoulders, roadside barriers, and the removal of blind corners.

“This new timing reflects community and stakeholder feedback, which stated this closure window is more convenient for people who travel this route regularly,” the press release reads.

The ministry says based on on-site geotechnical investigations, the safest times to blast are during daylight hours, allowing for the safe and quick removal of rocks after each blast.

Blasting and scheduled road closures are expected to continue through the spring.
