Motorcyclist dead after collision at Highway 19A intersection in Nanaimo

Nanaimo RCMP say a motorcyclist is dead after a collision Friday afternoon at the Turner Road and Highway 19A intersection.

The Nanaimo RCMP say they are still on scene of the collision, which occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m.

Police said investigators spoke with several witnesses for its preliminary investigation and it appears that the motorcyclist was travelling northbound on Highway 19A when he failed to stop for a red light at the intersection of Turner Road and Highway 19A. The investigation is continuing into the crash.

The motorcyclist collided with a vehicle turning southbound from Turner Road, onto Highway 19A, and he sustained life threatening injuries, police said.  BC paramedics took the man to the Nanaimo hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

There were no other injuries as a result of the collision and the intersection will be closed for at least four hours, police said.

Drive BC says Highway19A is closed between Rutherford Road and Turner Road for 0.7 kilometres.

Police say all vehicle traffic north of Turner Road and travelling south on Highway 19A, is being diverted on to Metral Road from Enterprise Road.

All vehicle traffic travelling north on Highway 19A and south of Turner Road, is being diverted onto Uplands Drive from Oliver Road.

Police are asking that all drivers avoid the area if at all possible. If anyone left the area before speaking with an officer, and has dashcam video of the collision, call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
