B.C. health officials reported 161 new cases of COVID-19 in the province on Friday. However, none of the new cases are in Island Health.

This is the second-highest number of daily COVID-19 cases B.C. has recorded in a 24 hour period since the start of the pandemic. The highest number of daily cases is 165, reported on Sept. 17.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer, and Stephen Brown, deputy minister of health, issued Friday’s numbers in a joint statement.

Two of the new cases are epidemiologically-linked, meaning people who were never tested but were presumed to have COVID-19 because they developed symptoms and were close contacts of a laboratory-confirmed case.

There are 1,302 active cases of COVID-19 in the province (up 41 from Oct.1), 3,114 people who are under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases (up 21 from Oct.1) and 7,813 people who tested positive have recovered.

“For many months now, COVID-19 has been a part of our communities. As a result, we have had to adapt and learn new ways to protect ourselves and each other,” Henry and Brown said in Friday’s statement.

“Despite the uncertainty and stress that has come with this, there is much that is in our control. Take confidence in knowing that always using our layers of protection reduces our risks, helps to break the chains of transmission and keeps the virus under control.

“We are all facing the same obstacle. With kindness and compassion to friends and neighbours, and steadfast commitment to doing the right thing, we will get through this together.”
