Sean Damien Kulai, 40, has been charged with one count of break and enter a dwelling with intent or commit mischief after he was arrested for allegedly breaking into and squatting inside a Nanaimo home earlier this month.

The man who allegedly broke into a Nanaimo family’s home and squatted in it for weeks has officially been charged.

Sean Damien Kulai, 40, has been charged with one count of ‘break and enter a dwelling with intent to commit mischief’ after he was arrested on Sept. 7 for allegedly breaking into and squatting inside a Nanaimo home.

Kulai remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court next Sept. 15. He is also scheduled to make court appearances for charges of possessing stolen property and breaching probation stemming from separate incidents that occurred earlier this year.

Kulai, according to publically available court records, has a lengthy criminal history dating back t0 2000, which includes convictions or guilty pleas for assault, theft, robbery, trafficking controlled substance, theft, robbery, and other crimes.

In 2003, a then 22-year-old Kulai pleaded guilty to assault, possessing a weapon for dangerous purposes, and unauthorized possession of a firearm after he physically attacked his grandparents at their home in Lantzville, according to the now-defunct Nanaimo Daily News. The newspaper also reported that the incident began after his grandparents caught him shooting holes in their garage door.
