A 34-year-old Victoria man is behind bars after he was caught performing an indecent act near a high school in Sooke, say police.

According to a recent Sooke RCMP press release, officers received multiple reports about a man allegedly committing an indecent act inside a truck parked near a high school in the 6200-block of Sooke Road on Oct. 13.

Mounties say although the suspect had fled before officers arrived on scene, officers were able to locate him and his truck that same evening.

Andrew Durant, a 34-year-old man from Victoria, was then arrested without incident by officers, the release notes.

“Witness reports were instrumental in allowing officers to identify the man,” Sgt. Kevin Shaw of the Sooke RCMP said in the release.

Durant has been charged with one count of committing an indecent act in a public place in relation to the incident, after the BC Prosecution Service approved the charge on Oct. 14.

“He has been remanded into custody until his next appearance on October 21, 2021,” said Shaw.

Mounties did not specifically name the school where the incident took place, however, Edward Milne Community School is the only high school located within the 6200-block of Sooke Road.

“We have been in close contact with the school administration and provided them relevant information to help ensure student safety,” added Shaw.

Anyone who witnessed the incident and has not already spoken with police is asked to contact the Sooke RCMP at 250-642-5241.
