A busy portion of Hillside Avenue was shut down on Friday morning after a pedestrian was killed in a collision.

Police closed down the 700-block of Hillside Avenue near Blanshard Street in both directions just after 11 a.m.

“The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation and our traffic analysts should be on scene shortly if not already,” said Victoria Police in a statement Friday afternoon.

The crash comes after several recent pedestrian collisions on Vancouver Island, including a fatal crash in Sooke and a fatal hit-and-run in Cedar this week. A 17-year-old in Saanich was also injured during a hit-and-run at a crosswalk on Monday.

At the beginning of February, a pedestrian died in a crash along a Saanich highway, and while not fatal, a woman was left in critical condition following a pedestrian crash in Qualicum Beach on Feb. 12.

A pedestrian in her 50s was also airlifted to hospital after a crash in Nanaimo on Tuesday, and a 15-year-old girl in Port Alberni was struck by a vehicle last week, though her injuries were less severe.
