One woman is dead following a hit-and-run on Cedar Road in Cedar, according to Nanaimo RCMP.
Mounties say the collision, which was reported around 8:50 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, claimed the life of a 90-year-old woman.
It happened in the 2800-block of Cedar Road, near Bennie Road, where a passing driver called 911 after finding the woman lying unconscious on the road.
“Despite the valiant efforts of bystanders who administered emergency first aid and first responders, the woman was determined to be deceased at the scene,” said RCMP.
“The BC Coroners Service was advised and attended to the scene and confirmed the death.”
Police, paramedics and fire crews attended, and the stretch of road was closed for more than four hours as investigators, including RCMP Traffic Services and an accident collision analyst, collected evidence.
CHEK News spoke with a family member, who said the victim was an amazing woman and grandmother who didn’t deserve this.
Mounties say the incident is being investigated as a fatal hit-and-run with a motor vehicle.
“Yeah, it’s going to rock that community,” said Const. Gary O’Brien with Nanaimo RCMP in an interview Sunday.
“They’ve had several tragic incidents the last couple months. Very tight-knit, everyone knows each other. An incident like this will have ramifications for a long time.”
RCMP are seeking the public’s help in identifying the driver and vehicle involved.
“There’s most likely damage to the vehicle, so that’s key for us,” added O’Brien.
“If you see a vehicle with damage to it and you remember seeing the vehicle a day or two earlier without that damage, it might not be related but we need to hear from you.”
RCMP are also asking drivers who were in the area between 8 and 8:45 p.m. Saturday to check their dashcam video for any insight into the incident.
