A 75-year-old pedestrian was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries after being struck by a driver in Qualicum Beach, according to Oceanside RCMP.

Mounties say the person was crossing the road at the intersection of Memorial Avenue and Fern Road West on Monday, Feb. 12, when the driver of a black Ford F350 pickup truck hit them.

RCMP says in a news release Tuesday officers, as well as crews from Qualicum Beach Fire Rescue and paramedics with BC Ambulance Service, were called to the scene at 3:50 p.m.

RCMP says an initial investigation determined the pedestrian was crossing in a marked crosswalk.

The driver of the truck immediately stopped, called 911 and provided first aid to the pedestrian, who was later transported to hospital by helicopter.

The pedestrian is in “critical condition,” adds RCMP.

“Speed and impairment have been excluded as contributing factors in this crash, and the driver is cooperating fully with the investigation,” said Oceanside RCMP Sgt. Shane Worth in the release.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam video of the incident and has not yet spoken with police is asked to call Oceanside RCMP at 250-248-6111, quoting file 2024-1322.
