Environment Canada has indicated that a rainfall warning remains in effect for parts of Vancouver Island on Thursday, Dec. 31.

The weather agency says that residents along the west coast of Vancouver Island should be prepared for heavy rain, beginning this afternoon.

“Another storm system will approach the BC Coast today,” reads a statement from Environment Canada. “Rain is expected to develop this afternoon and become heavy tonight.”

Environment Canada says that the rain along the west coast will continue into Friday.

According to the weather advisory, rainfall totals are forecast to range from 80 mm near the coast to possibly more than 110 mm inland.

Environment Canada has also issued a wind warning on Thursday for the east coast of Vancouver Island.

The agency says that a storm system will hit the areas between Courtenay and Campbell River as well as between Nanoose Bay and Fanny Bay.

The system is expected to bring rain and blustery winds both Thursday night and Friday.

Winds are expected to peak Friday morning, with wind speeds of 70 km/h gusting to 90 possible near the Strait, according to the weather agency.

The high winds are expected to ease through Friday afternoon.

Residents can track any power outages on BC Hydro’s website.
