British Columbia health officials reported 446 new cases – including 14 in Island Health – and nine deaths from COVID-19 since their last update on Jan. 11.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. climbs to 58,553 while the province’s death toll has reached 1,019.

Of the new cases reported, 96 were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health, 233 were in Fraser Health, 14 in Island Health, 67 in Interior Health, and 46 in Northern Health. There were no new cases in people who normally reside outside of Canada.

There are currently 5,045 active cases in the province, 368 people in hospital — 72 of whom are in intensive care — and 7,238 people under active public health monitoring due to possible exposure to an identified case.

On a positive note, 51,144 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 and more than 62,294 have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Today’s data was released by health officials in a statement. Their next live update is slated to take place later this week.

Island Health

Although the provincial government reported 14 new cases in Island Health today, it appears the number might actually be higher.

According to Island Health’s website, the number of new cases reported today was 17 — three more than what was reported by the province.

However, Island Health says new, active, and total case counts may differ from BCCDC reports day to day because of “differences in timing of reporting” across laboratory and public health data sources.

There are currently 185 active cases on Vancouver Island – 35 in the south Island, 120 in the central Island, and 30 in the north Island. Since the last update on Jan. 11, there are two more active cases in central Island and two fewer cases in both the north and south Island.

Over the course of the pandemic, the Island Health region has reported 1,154 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Of those cases, 379 are in the south Island, 528 are in the central Island, and 247 are in the north Island.
