Eastern Vancouver Island could experience some windy weather on Labour Day.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for parts of eastern Vancouver Island, including the Greater Victoria Area, the Gulf Islands, Port Renfrew, Duncan, Lake Cowichan and Nanaimo, alerting to potentially gusty winds.

Winds could reach as high as 70 km/h this afternoon in the region due to a sudden change in weather conditions across the prairies this weekend, causing a strong ridge of high pressure to build over northern B.C. that is now expanding southwards, according to Environment Canada.

“Rising pressures will drive strong outflow winds through coastal valleys today. Winds will likely be at their peak during the day but could potentially remain gusty through this evening,” Environment Canada said in its statement.
