The West Shore RCMP are currently investigating the report of a social media message that is advising students of Belmont Secondary School to not attend school on Dec. 8.

In a release from police on Tuesday, RCMP say that messages have allegedly circulating between students about the possibility of a shooting taking place at the school.

West Shore RCMP say they are currently investigating the message and “have not confirmed the validity of the message,” or its origin.

The school administration, as well as School District 62, are aware of the social media messages, that were circulating online Monday evening. The district says it is working with police.

An e-mail message was also sent out to families that confirmed classes at Belmont would continue as usual.

“The RCMP and District are aware and we are working collaboratively to ensure school continues to be safe,” Lamond said. “At this point we have identified the source and will be meeting with them and the family this morning.”

Police say that investigators have not been able to substantiate any threats at this time.

There is no evidence to suggest such an act will take place, however we are treating this seriously. Currently we have police officers in attendance at the school who will continue this investigation and remain at the school as required. The school remains open at this time, said Cst. Nancy Saggar, Media Relations Officer, West Shore RCMP.
