Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for much of Vancouver Island warning of rising temperatures and possible wildfire smoke.

An unseasonably strong ridge of high pressure will result in climbing temperatures throughout the weekend, reaching the low 30’s for areas away from the immediate coast, according to meteorologists.

Wildfire smoke is also predicted to return to the coast beginning Sunday night or on Labour Day Monday following developing outflow winds and a stagnant airmass.

The wildfire smoke is said to be a deciding factor in forecasting temperatures and seeing if weather records will be broken.

Environment Canada released the statement amidst the challenging wildfire situation in the province.

The province wide state of emergency has now been extended until September 15th.

Winds in some areas of the province along with forecasted hot and dry conditions in September continue to challenge fire crews and British Columbia residents.
