Mounties in Nanaimo have issued warrants for a 33-year-old man accused of assaulting a police officer.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, Michael Bonson, 33, recently failed to appear in provincial court on charges that include assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and flight from police.

RCMP describe Bonson as a “violent offender.”

The charges stem from an incident allegedly involving Bonson and a police officer that occurred at around 2 a.m. on Sept. 21, 2020 in downtown Nanaimo.

That’s when, according to RCMP, an officer pulled over Bonson and attempted to arrest him for possession of illegal drugs.

However, during the arrest, Bonson allegedly became violent, assaulted the officer, and managed to break free from the officer’s grip — despite the officer using a stun gun.

“Bonson managed to break free from the officer, then got back into his vehicle and drove off. Neither Bonson or his vehicle were located. The officer did not require medical treatment and continued working,” Const. Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP, said in a press release.

Nanaimo RCMP have been unable to locate Bonson since the incident and believe he is “taking measures to actively evade police.”

Bonson is described as a five-foot-11 inch tall 180-pound man with short blonde hair and blue eyes. He has a moustache and goatee and is known to drive an older model Nissan Pathfinder, however, police aren’t sure if the vehicle is currently being driven due to various mechanical issues.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Michael Bonson, please call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file # 2020-34702.
