Victoria's Steve Nash, who will be inducted into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame in July, led the men's team to the 2000 Olympic quarter-finals in Sydney, the last time Canada's men qualified for a Summer Games.

Canada Basketball has announced that Victoria’s Steve Nash will be inducted into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame, headlining the classes of 2021 and 2022.

Steve Nash will be inducted alongside Stewart Granger (Player) and Angela (Johnson) Straub (Player), along with Michèle Bélanger (Coach), John Bitove (Builder), Rick Fox (Player), and Tony Simms (Player) as part of the two classes, respectively.

The Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place as part of a Legends Brunch in partnership with SLAM Canada, on Sunday, July 10, 2022 at Ricarda’s Restaurant located in downtown Toronto.

“On behalf of Canada Basketball, and players, coaches and fans of our game across the country, I would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to each of our Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame inductees from both the classes of 2021 and 2022,” said Michael Bartlett, President & CEO of Canada Basketball.

“To be enshrined in the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame is a great honour and each of this year’s inductees has made a lasting and unique impact at all levels of the sport.”

Canada Basketball says that the Legends Brunch and induction ceremony will be followed by an on-court recognition of the inductees at the gold medal game of GLOBL JAM Fives, taking place at Mattamy Athletic Centre.

“The past few weeks have been nothing short of historic as we officially launched SLAM Canada, a special Canadian edition of SLAM and SLAM’s first-ever international magazine,” said Mark Starkey, Strategic Advisor and Board Member, SLAM. “While basketball continues to see unprecedented growth in Canada with record numbers of Canadians in the NBA, WNBA and across the NCAA, today’s success is built off the foundation that many of these inductees have built.”

Nash played 18 seasons in the NBA playing with the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers. He was named league MVP in 2005 and 2006 and had 10,335 assists during his career, the fourth-most in NBA history. In 2018, The St. Michaels University School graduate was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and last year Nash was named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team — the only Canadian player to be named to the team.

Earlier this year, the NBA also unveiled a commemorative coin honouring the famed Victoria athlete, called the Steve Nash Signature Dime. The coin features two MVP trophies — the Maurice Podoloff Trophy — and Nash on the front and the commemorative NBA 75th logo along with the “10,335” and “Dropping Dimes” inscribed on the back.

Nash is currently the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets in the National Basketball Association.
