Victoria is officially the seventh “rattiest” city in all of Canada, according to pest control company Orkin.

B.C.’s capital is one of the smallest communities to make it on this year’s list, which is based on how many calls Orkin got for rodent treatments between Aug. 1, 2022, and July 31, 2023.

The rattiest city in the country went to Toronto, followed by Vancouver in second place.

Orkin has several tips on how to rodent-proof your home this winter.

It recommends cutting back trees and shrubbery at least one metre away from your home, so that rodents don’t have a place to hide and live near your house.

Residents should also check their homes for any signs of rodent droppings, burrows, and rub marks against walls – and plug any cracks larger than one-quarter of an inch.

Crumbs and spills should also be cleaned up as soon as possible to avoid attracting mice and rats, and any standing water should be removed, such as clogged gutters or water trapped in trash cans or recycling bins.
