Matthew McTavish has been charged with manslaughter in connection with a shooting in December 2020, according to Victoria police.

Early in the morning on December 22, 2020, police and BC Emergency Health Services responded to a call that a man had been shot in the 600-block on Grenville Avenue in Esquimalt.

Upon arrival, they found a man — who police have not named — with life-threatening injuries, and BCEHS transported the man to hospital. He later died at the hospital.

At the time, police indicated they believed this was a targeted shooting, though no further details were provided about this in the latest update.

Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) conducted the investigation and on Dec. 20 McTavish was charged with one count of manslaughter, possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, and possession of a firearm contrary to order.

Possession of a firearm contrary to order in the Criminal Code means the person is prohibited to have a weapon under a previous order.
