The Victoria Police Department have arrested one man following a fatal shooting that took place in Esquimalt on Tuesday morning.

In a press release sent out Tuesday, VicPD says the incident occurred shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 22 in the 600-block of Grenville Avenue.

Officers say they received a report that a man had been shot at a multi-unit residential building.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers say they managed to locate the victim, who was suffering from life-threatening injuries as a result of a shooting.

BC Emergency Health Services attended and transported the victim to hospital.

The alleged shooter had left the scene prior to VicPD’s arrival, however, officers managed to locate a suspect, arrest them and transport them to jail at the department.

The victim succumbed to his injuries in hospital. This file is now being investigated as a homicide by the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU).

Anyone with information about this incident, including anyone who witnessed the fatal shooting, is being asked to contact VIIMCU at 250-380-6211.

The file remains under investigation and, according to investigators, it is believed that the incident was a targeted shooting. With this in mind, police do not believe there is a risk to wider public safety.
