A hummingbird and her chicks are the focus of a Victoria man’s livestream after they set up residence in his yard.

It all started a little while ago after Ian Taylor and his family noticed a hummingbird building a nest in their yard.

“Once the nest was built, we had a little peek in saw the eggs and then decided to have an attempt at live streaming it,” said Taylor.

So Taylor went out and bought a camera, some equipment and established a livestream that can be viewed 24/7 on his YouTube channel called DIG BC.

“It is hard to get stressed over watching a hummingbird taking care of chicks,” he said.

Just the other day, the chicks hatched and Taylor believes they will take flight within a couple of weeks.

“They’re growing really fast daily you can see the difference,” he said.

“I like watching them grow and at night when hummingbird’s falling asleep her eye blinks really slowly,” said Taylor’s daughter, Emily.

It’s not the first time a hummingbird has decided to build a nest in the family’s yard. Taylor says they had a nest last year and streamed it for their family using an old phone.

“Last year we took an old phone and streamed it just for the family on the computer and this year we thought why not take it one step further and stream it live so everyone can enjoy it,” he said.

Depending on the time of day, Taylor’s livestream has around 20 to 30 people watching and commenting.

“[The] response has been great, lots of positive comments, people seem to really be enjoying it,” said Taylor.
