In this edition of Road to Recovery with Douglas Magazine, CHEK’s Jasmine Bala sits down with Samantha Harron, one of the owners of Hemp House Hair Salon on Salt Spring Island.

Harron and her husband, Tristan, designed and built the hair salon from scratch, with the goal of being extremely sustainable.

Hemp House Hair Salon is a zero-impact building, constructed with hempcrete, a non-toxic renewable mixture of hemp stems, water and lime. They use a rainwater catchment system to use the salon’s water for irrigation around the property and solar panels for electricity. The window framing is sustainable too, built with naturally fallen logs.

Watch Harron share what went into building a sustainable business and offer advice for other business owners going green.
