A Victoria couple has found themselves $1 million richer after winning big on a Lotto 6/49 ticket that was purchased at the Royal Oak Country Grocer.

After Donald and Janice MacDonald found out they won the July 28, 2021 $1 Million Guaranteed Prize Draw, BC Lottery Corporation says the duo came up with a creative way to pass along the news to friends — playing a game of telephone.

“We took two couples out for dinner,” said Janice. “During dessert, I said ‘let’s play a game of telephone.’ That’s the one where you whisper something in their ear and then they whisper it in the next person’s ear. We told them they couldn’t react to what they heard. It was so fun watching them hear it and try not to react!”

Donald outlined that the pair was “stunned” when it initially learnt that it had won the $1-million prize.

“I was in the Shoppers [Drug Mart] in Royal Oak,” said Donald. “I thought I had won $1,000 and then I put my glasses on and realized there were a lot more zeros!”

As for how the couple will celebrate, Donald says they will take it slow and figure out the best way to spend the money, after a little celebrating of course.

So far in 2021, B.C. lottery players redeemed more than $60 million in winnings from Lotto 6/49. Lotto 6/49 is a nationwide lottery game drawn on Wednesdays and Saturdays after 7:30 p.m. (PST).

Just a few weeks ago, another Victoria woman scored big on a BCLC Scratch & Win ticket that wound up netting her $50,000.
