A Victoria city councillor has quashed rumours about a potential entry into provincial politics.
Coun. Ben Isitt said in a statement posted to social media Tuesday that he will not be submitting his name as a candidate in the provincial election.
“I am announcing that I will continue to do the job that I have been elected to do – stand up for the people and the planet as a city councillor and regional director,” wrote Isitt.
There has been speculation in the media and online that Isitt, who has been a city councillor since 2011, could run as the Green Party’s candidate in the Victoria-Beacon Hill riding.
“I intend to continue working with grassroots community members and organizations, and counterparts in the provincial and federal office, to build a more inclusive, sustainable community here in the Lekwungen territory and beyond,” said Isitt.
The city councillor says in this election, he will be supporting “progressive candidates” who share a vision of a society that “replaces colonization, climate chaos, capitalism and relations of dog-eat-dog exploitation” with more “balanced” relationships.
