The Victoria Airport is one of eight winners of the Airports Council International Best Hygiene Measures by Region award for North America.

The award was introduced in 2020 to recognize the airports that were implementing measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The Victoria Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport were the only two Canadian airports that won this award this year.

“The Hygiene Award is particularly valued for our airport community as it directly reflects the extraordinary efforts that went into the implementation of our TravelSafe YYJ program and its continued support by our outstanding facilities team and airport service partners,” said Geoff Dickson, president and CEO of the Victoria Airport Authority.

“At YYJ, the health and safety of passengers, partners and employees is our top priority and to be recognized by our customers for the level of hygiene measures in place, the clarity of those measures and the confidence they have while in our care is especially meaningful.”

The award is based on surveys, where passengers are asked to rate the effectiveness of safety and hygiene measures in place, the clarity of signage and instructions to inform about safety and hygiene measures, the ability of staff to apply safety and hygiene measures, the level of confidence to travel based on safety and hygiene measures and the level of stress based on experience at the airport.

A spokesperson for the airport says the following measures were implemented during the pandemic:

  • Limiting entry into the terminal to travellers only.
  • Requiring masks.
  • Physical distancing requirements.
  • Directional traffic flow.
  • Plexiglass barriers.
  • Enhanced cleaning measures in all areas with medical grade cleaning products.
  • Installation of hand sanitizer stations throughout the terminal.
  • Improving air filtration in the terminal building.
  • Receiving the Airports Council International Health Accreditation.

This is the second year in a row that the Victoria Airport received this award.

There are a total of 46 winners of the Best Hygiene Measures award around the world.

“As we come together as an industry to rebuild, listening and acting on the changing needs of customers is more important than ever,” said Luis Felipe de Oliveira, director general of ACI World.

“I am proud of the achievements of Victoria International Airport in winning the Best Hygiene Measures by region (North America) which shows that they are prioritizing customers, setting an example of excellence for all their peers.”
