Victoria International Airport (YYJ) is soaring to familiar heights after once again being named one of the most efficient airports in North America.

The airport located in North Saanich says it was awarded the “most efficient airport in the under 5 million passengers category” at the 2022 Air Transport Research Society (ATRS) Global Airport Efficiency Awards on Aug. 25.

According to YYJ, this is the fourth time it has received the award, with previous recognition in 2014, 2016 and 2020.

Geoff Dickson, President and CEO of the Victoria Airport Authority, says YYJ is “delighted” to be recognized and notes that “efficiency” is the airport’s mantra.

“While the COVID-19 pandemic created operating challenges, we remain an airport with some of the lowest aviation rates and fees in Canada,” said Dickson.

“It has never been a more important time for us to continue this successful formula and do everything we can to support our airlines and exceed the level of service our customers expect.”

In a previous interview with CHEK News, Dickson discussed how the airport managed through the pandemic and the short and long-term future of flying.

ATRS, a worldwide research network headquartered in the University of British Columbia, held its ceremony in Belgium with awards stemming from the 2022 Global Airport Performance Benchmarking Report.

YYJ says the report’s results include 204 airports and compares airport performance worldwide, focusing on productivity, competitiveness and operating and management efficiency.

Orlando International Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Airport and Mineta San Jose International Airport were also named top North American performers.
