A popular beach on Vancouver Island narrowly made the list of the top 50 beaches in the world, according to travel website Big 7 Travel.

Mystic Beach, located on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island, was named the 49th best beach in the world by Big 7 Travel.

The beach, located off the Juan de Fuca trail west of Jordan River, is popular with local hikers and international travellers alike.

“Canada might not immediately spring to mind when you think about beautiful beaches, but with some 15,000 miles of beaches, it should do,” reads the Big 7 Travel list.

“Mystic Beach, located on the southern coast of Vancouver Island, is one of its most enchanting,” the website continues. “Set along the Juan de Fuca Trail, the white sandy beach is set against a lush forest, with a picturesque waterfall cascading right into the brilliant blue sea.”

Mystic Beach was ranked just ahead of Koekohe Beach in New Zealand, in 50th place, and just behind Keem Bay, Ireland, in 48th place.

The top beach in the world, according to the Big 7 Travel’s 2023 list, is White Beach, Philippines, for its powdery white sand, sparkling water and vibrant forest backdrop.

Big 7 Travel says it created its list based on its own aggregate data, input from its editors, and areas that have been recognized by Blue Flag, an organization that aims to uphold high marine tourism standards in sustainability, safety and accessibility.

It’s not the first time a Vancouver Island beach has been recognized on the world stage.

Earlier this year, San Josef Bay on the North Island was also named one of the best beaches in the world by sunscreen company Banana Boat.
