Urban plaza at Humboldt and Douglas opens Thursday marking completion of Wharf Street protected bike lanes

A new urban plaza that welcomes all including passers-by, peddlers and ping pong enthusiasts, opens for public use in downtown Victoria on Thursday.

The City says the facility at Humboldt and Douglas features benches and seating, new trees, bike parking, outdoor table tennis, as well as pedestrian and bicycle crossing enhancements.

Table tennis paddles and balls are being given to nearby schools, businesses, hotels and residences.

A community street mural will be added to the plaza in September.

The opening marks the completion of the protected bike lanes along Wharf and Humboldt from the Johnson Street Bridge to Douglas.

The City says the remainder of the shared-use cycling facilities along Humboldt will open in the fall.

A reminder to drivers to watch for and obey new traffic signals in the area and to use caution when navigating the new corridor.

The City says Safety ambassadors have been stationed along Wharf Street to help answer questions about the new facilities and provide educational materials to road users.
