The recovery of a stolen vehicle in Nanaimo resulted in two police officers with minor injuries and a 26-year-old man under arrest.

At around 2 p.m. Wednesday, the Nanaimo RCMP street crime unit came across a stolen Dodge Ram pickup truck heading north on the Island Highway.

Officers used their vehicles to block the truck that encountered a red light at Northfield Road.

But the brakes of a police vehicle from a neighbouring detachment failed and it struck the driver’s side door of a Nanaimo RCMP cruiser.

Two officers received minor injuries but did not require hospitalization and remained on duty, but the police vehicle was damaged.

A search of the truck that was reported stolen in Nanaimo Oct. 26 found a replica Uzi gun, ammunition, knives and a quantity of suspected cocaine.

The driver was arrested and faces charges of possession of stolen property, possession for the purpose of trafficking and firearm charges related to the seizure of the prohibited ammunition.

Nanaimo RCMP says the investigation continues and the suspect is appearing in Nanaimo Provincial Court Thursday.
