Two Central Saanich police officers were sent to hospital early Saturday morning after inhaling carbon monoxide while rescuing occupants of a Brentwood Bay home.

Police were at a house following reports of a male in distress, upon arriving at the residence they found the home was locked.

They were eventually able to gain entry and remove an unconscious man and another occupant.

Both officers suffered carbon monoxide inhalation but were later released from hospital.

“Based on some observations that they made outside the house they felt it was necessary to force their way inside and once inside, the house was full of smoke and they managed to work their way through the smoke and locate the man and another person in the house,” said Central Saanich Police’s Chief Constable Les Sylven.

“These police officers knew they were going into a high-risk situation but chose to do it anyway to try and save his man and other person in the house, and they did so.”

The occupants of the home were also taken to the hospital and are expected to make a full recovery.

Central Saanich police is thanking the Central Saanich Fire Department for their assistance and professionalism as well as B.C. Ambulance who provided medical care to all involved.

The incident comes after a string of other carbon monoxide incidents across the province in the past few months.
