Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced an expansion of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) program, while offering wage increases to workers on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced an expansion of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) program, while offering wage increases to workers on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During his daily national address, Trudeau revealed the federal government would be altering the eligibility guidelines of the CERB program in an effort to provide government relief to citizens across the country who are receiving some income.

The newly-eligible Canadians include:

  • Workers making up to $1000 per month
  • Seasonal workers
  • Anyone whose E.I. has recently run out

The Prime Minister said this will include part-time grocery store workers or contractors who have the opportunity to pick up some shifts. In regards to seasonal workers, Trudeau said that if you have a job that is no longer coming or will not be able to offer enough hours, you are now eligible to apply as well.

“Even if you are still working or want to start working again, you will probably need help to make ends meet,” said Trudeau from Rideau Cottage in Ottawa.

Anyone who has had their EI benefits run out since January 1 is now eligible as well, added Trudeau, while suggesting that more alterations to the financial aid programs are on the way.

“For others who still need help including post-secondary students and businesses worried about commercial rent, we will have more to say to you very soon,” said Trudeau.

For those eligible, the CERB will provide financial aid in the form of $500 per week for the next 16 weeks. Eligible applicants can apply online at canada.ca or by calling 1-800-959-2041.

Along with the CERB expansion, Trudeau revealed the government was going to be providing wage boosts for workers on the front lines. According to the Prime Minister, the federal government will be working alongside the provinces and territories to top-up essential workers who are making under $2,500 a month.

“For many workers looking after the most vulnerable Canadians, including seniors and those with disabilities, we know conditions have gotten more difficult over the past weeks and you need support right now,” said Trudeau.

As far as a timeline goes, Trudeau said that he will be meeting with provincial leaders tomorrow and will be pushing for these wage boosts to come as soon as possible.

“As we face an unprecedented threat to public health, you are our most important line of defence and we will do whatever we can to help you do your job and support you through this time.”

The announcement comes as long-term care facilities continue to be devastated by the coronavirus all across the country.

During Wednesday’s announcement, Prime Minister Trudeau also announced a new mental health portal that has been launched on canada.ca and the country’s COVID-19 app. The online tool allows people to assess their own mental health, connect with peers and gives them access to professional help from home.
