The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) is sending investigators to Nanaimo following the evacuation of a Westjet flight at Nanaimo Airport when smoke filled the cabin of the plane Tuesday.

In a statement, the TSB says it “will gather information and assess the occurrence.”

The flight being looked into is the Westjet Encore flight 3161 that arrived in Nanaimo from Vancouver around 12:40 p.m.

The Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 turboprop had 56 passengers and two crew members on board.

The flight crew had alerted staff on the ground that there was smoke in the plane’s cabin about five minutes before landing.

The passengers were brought to the terminal from the aircraft and were able to gather their luggage.

There were no reports of any injuries and due to a maintenance inspection by Westjet, three subsequent flights were cancelled.
