B.C. Hazmat is letting anyone who will be near the Ocean Air Float Plane launch in North Saanich to not be concerned when they see several emergency response vehicles and personnel on the shoreline Wednesday afternoon.

The final day of the B.C. Hazmat Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Techniques (SCAT) training will be held near the launch site at the far end of the Victoria Airport.

The course trains personnel for shoreline cleanup from the field to incident management response levels, as well as to understand the range of shore-based cleanup measures.

It includes a way of measuring oiled shores, determining the best treatment options, applying clean-up constraints to reduce further harm, and using data for decision making.

B.C. Hazmat says several large vehicles and equipment will be in the secured area, which does not allow access for bystanders, but will be visible from the neighbouring public beach and park.

The first two days of the SCAT training are held in the classroom with a shoreline field tour conducted on the third day.
