Tofino Bus will no longer operate bus service between Campbell River and Port Hardy, after its application was approved by the PTB.

A local bus company will no longer be operating between two northern Vancouver Island communities.

The Passenger Transportation Board (PTB), the province’s independent licensing tribunal, approved Tofino Bus Services Incorporated’s application to eliminate its route between Campbell River and Port Hardy, according to a press release issued Wednesday.

In its ruling, the PTB said Tofino Bus presented evidence demonstrating that there had been low ridership on the route and that the numbers indicated “insufficient demand to support public need for the service.”

PTB also said that if Tofino Bus were to continue operations along the route, it would have a negative impact on the bus company as a whole on Vancouver Island.

However, the PTB also said it has received an application from Port Hardy-based Waivin Flags Ltd. for a license to operate Campbell River and Port Hardy three times a week in each direction.

The board is currently reviewing that application and has not made a decision.
