B.C. reports 104 new COVID-19 cases, 3 new cases in Island Health

The number of new cases of COVID-19 continues to climb in British Columbia.

B.C. health officials on Wednesday reported 104 new cases – including three new cases in Island Health – bringing the provincial total to 5,952.

There are seven active cases in Island Health. Of the three new cases, one is in southern Vancouver Island, one is in central Vancouver Island and one is in northern Vancouver Island.

“We need to redouble our efforts to ensure our layers of protection are always part of our daily routines – for everyone in our family. This will allow us to push our curve down once again,” the province said in a press release issued Wednesday afternoon.

Since the pandemic began, there are 1,974 cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 3,112 in the Fraser Health region, 178 in the Island Health region (an increase of three), 445 in the Interior Health region, and 164 in the Northern Health region as well as 79 cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 1,127 active cases of COVID-19 in the province.

A total of 33 people are currently in hospital, 14 of whom are in intensive care, while 2,786 people currently under active public health monitoring due to exposure to known COVID cases.

Meanwhile, a total of 4,605 people have since recovered from the deadly virus.

On another positive note, officials said there had been no new deaths from COVID-19 over the past 24 hours. B.C.’s COVID-19 death toll remains at 209 deaths.

There have been no new community outbreaks. However, there is one new health-care facility outbreak at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The outbreak at Langley Memorial Hospital has been declared over. In total, eight long-term care or assisted-living facilities and two acute-care facilities in B.C. have active outbreaks.

Under Island Health, there are three possible public exposures listed. Anyone who was at the following locations on the following dates and times is asked to self-monitor for symptoms.

  • Mary’s Bleue Moon Cafe at 9535 Canora Road, Sidney, B.C. The dates and times provided by Island Health are Aug. 21 between 4 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. and Aug. 22 between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. OR between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.
  • 10 Acres Cafe & Market at the Sidney Pier Hotel & Spa (NOT The Pier restaurant) at 9805 Seaport Place, Sidney, B.C. The dates and times provided by Island Health are Aug. 20 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Aug. 21 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Il Falcone Restaurant 536 6th Street Courtenay, B.C. The date and times are Aug. 16 between 3 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

According to data released by Johns Hopkins University and Medicine, the number of COVID-19 cases worldwide is over 25.8 million. Over 859,000 deaths have been reported.
