Thumbs up for Royals; playoff spot clinched following win over Cougars

WATCH: The Victoria Royals downed the Prince George Cougars 5-2 on Saturday night at the Save On Foods Memorial Centre, locking up 2nd place in the B.C. Division with a handful of games remaining in the regular season. 

It was Don Cherry Suit Up night at the rink, with the Royals sporting special uniforms for the occasion.

The Royals jumped out to the early 2-0 lead, but the Cougars came back strong in the second period to tie the game at 2-2 after forty minutes. T

he Royals broke the tie under a minute into the third, as Phillip Schultz scored on his own rebound and gave the crowd the ‘Don Cherry thumbs up’ celebration to the Victoria faithful after scoring the game-winning goal.

With the win, the Royals clinched a playoff berth and will hold onto the 2nd place spot in the B.C. Division, as they wait to see whether the Kelowna Rockets or Kamloops Blazers will emerge as their first-round playoff opponent.
