Two people have been taken to hospital after a roof collapsed and trapped them at a home near Parksville Sunday.

Officials say they were called to the 1800-block of Steelhead Place in Errington at around 1:30 p.m. after two people who were working on demolishing the home became trapped after a roof collapsed.

When firefighters arrived, they found two men trapped underneath debris on the second floor.

“It was a chaotic scene,” said Deputy Fire Chief George Clemm of the Errington Fire Department. “First we had to stabilize the bottom floor because they had demolished some of the bottom floor and work our way up to them and start to get the pressure off them. They were both somewhat restricted in breathing.”

Both men were rescued and were flown to Victoria General Hospital by B.C. Ambulance. Both were talking and have non-life threatening injuries.

B.C. Ambulance says they sent multiple ambulances and two helicopters following the incident.

Witnesses say the home and roof appeared to be old, and that the roof seemed mossy.

WorkSafeBC investigators arrived at the rural home late Sunday afternoon.
