The 35 nominees for Canada’s Top 10 Best New Restaurants is out and three of of them are on Vancouver Island, including two in Greater Victoria and one in Ucluelet.
Air Canada sent one writer on an anonymous, month-long, cross-country journey to determine the list.
“Reflecting the high calibre of new restaurant openings in Canada this year, we are proud to announce that we have 35 nominees on our 2019 longlist instead of 30,” said Air Canada’s Andy Shibata.
“We want to celebrate the distinguished talent that is the foundation of Canada’s culinary culture, and feature the chefs and restaurateurs who deliver international flavours to Canadians.”
In Victoria, downtown’s Nowhere *A Restaurant earns a spot among the contenders “Under-promise and over-deliver. That’s the modus operandi behind the mind-blowing food coming out of Nowhere,” the review reads.
Langford’s House of Boateng also makes the list, “Opened by Ghana-born Castro Boateng, one of the city’s top caterers, this is where you will find bofrot African donuts, an outrageously delicious plate of crispy pork belly and fried plantains.”
Ucluetlet’s Pluvio is also in the running for the Top 10, “Tucked away amid the surf shops and galleries on Peninsula Road, an ex-Wickaninnish Inn chef and his wife and business partner have created a contemporary west coast haven.”
The Top 10 will be announced on October 24, 2019.
