Three Vancouver Island residents have filed appeals with the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada to dispute tickets they received for not wearing masks on a BC Ferries sailing.

Tara Macart and Jonathan Macart of Qualicum Beach were each issued tickets of $1,950 and Karla Rothweiler of Chemainus was issued a ticket of $1,050.

According to the tickets, the three were travelling on the Queen of Oak Bay from Nanaimo to Horseshoe Bay on Oct. 17, 2020 and refused to wear a face covering or provide a medical exemption.

The reasonings given for the three tickets were identical. It is not immediately clear why Tara and Jonathan were issued tickets for a larger amount than Karla.

Tara and Jonathan’s case is scheduled to be heard on Sept. 19, 2022 at 12 p.m. EDT, and Karla’s case is scheduled for Sept. 22, 2022 at 12 p.m. EDT.

CHEK News has reached out to Tara, Jonathan, and Karla for interviews and will update this article if a response is received.
