The B.C. Conservation Officer Service says it’s investigating after two cougar kittens were found slain on a forest road in the Cowichan Valley.

The kittens were found shot and killed near Hill 60 Forest Service Road, BCCOS said Thursday.

Investigators believe the animals were killed within the last week and note the paws and heads of the kittens had been removed.

“The killing of cougar kittens shows a blatant disregard for ethical hunting and wildlife conservation,” said Duncan-area conservation officer Mark Kissinger. “Thankfully, this is not the type of offence we see frequently.”

It is illegal under the BC Wildlife Act to kill cougars under one year of age, any cougar with spots or cougars in a family unit.

Anyone with information on the poaching incident is asked to call the province’s RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.
