Thousands affected by power outages on Vancouver Island

Crews working to restore power in Coombs where more than 500 customers are affected. B.C. Hydro expects to have power going there at 12:30 p.m.

UPDATE: While power has been restored in some areas of Vancouver Island, B.C. Hydro is still working to get power back to more customers, especially in the north and central parts of the island.

Two power outages east of Sooke had more than 2,200 customers without power.

The cause is from trees across power lines and reported to B.C. Hydro at 9:10 a.m. Monday.

More than half of the people affected there have had power restored and more than 900 are waiting to be able to put the lights on back on.

High winds are the suspected cause of a number of power outages happening on Vancouver Island Monday morning.

B.C. Hydro reports more than 3,000 customers are without power because of 10 outages on the island.

More than 1,500 customers in Nanaimo are without power, with the cause under investigation by B.C. Hydro.

Nearly 800 people have been in the dark from Qualicum Bay to Bowser along Highway 19 just after 8 a.m.

Trees down on wires are reported in Port Alberni, along with other power outages in that area which is disrupting service to more than 600 customers.
