SUV shears off power pole in Nanaimo

Nanaimo RCMP is investigating after a driver sheared off a power pole in the 4100-block of Departure Bay road.

The crash happened after 9 p.m. Saturday. Witnesses say the driver appeared to be speeding and the impact was “startling”.

“It was a crazy event,” said Spencer Thomlinson who witnessed the crash. “He came flying up this road, did a slight swerve and took the pole right out. It brushed over his car. He popped up over the curb, started sliding and then she and Shelby ran over to the crash and then he got out of the vehicle, slammed the door and yelled at them.”

Nearby resident Gary Boyce heard the screech and the crash and called 911 immediately. He ran to the Jeep SUV but said even though both airbags deployed no one was in it.

Witnesses say the driver got out of the SUV and then walked into Subway before walking several blocks down the road.

Boyce said he caught up with the driver there.

“He didn’t really look injured, just really startled,” added Boyce.

That’s when police caught up with him and spoke to him before B.C. Ambulance put him on a stretcher and took him to hospital.

Following the crash, the power lines were still suspended in the air but lower than normal.

B.C. Hydro was called to fix the power pole, according to their power outage list online no one lost power as a result of the accident.
