A 30-year-old woman with outstanding warrants Island wide was tracked down by Nanaimo RCMP dog Jager leading to her arrest.
Sarah Marleau of Campbell River was arrested on a number of outstanding warrants originating out of Campbell River, Courtenay and North Cowichan for various offences, including assault with a weapon, theft under $5,000, three counts of fraud x 3, four counts of possession of stolen property, and breach of an undertaking.
Nanaimo RCMP say they received a call from a resident of Verte Place reporting three people with flashlights near a parked car early Tuesday morning around 2 a.m.
When officers arrived, they located a black Honda Acura that had been reported stolen from Nanaimo four days earlier.
Although police did not see anyone around the vehicle, they called for Police Dog Services to attend.
Nanaimo RCMP says Cst. Grafton and Jager established a track leading off to nearby bushes and the police dog found a female hiding about 30-feet into the track.
After the female refused commands from Cst. Grafton, Jager engaged the suspect who was quickly arrested and taken into police custody for possession of stolen property related to the stolen vehicle in Nanaimo.
Police say the suspect had several puncture wounds during the struggle with Jager and was taken to hospital, where she was treated for her wounds.
Marleau was taken into custody at the Nanaimo RCMP detachment and will be in a Courtenay courtroom today.
“This is an excellent example of why it is important to report suspicious activity immediately to the police,” Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said in a release.
“As a result of one phone call, and thanks to Jager, a violent offender was taken off the streets and police were able to retrieve a stolen vehicle.”
