A woman who had her SUV stolen in Nanaimo late last month has her vehicle back tonight but not some of the highly sentimental rings that were in it.

Leslie Dickie was staying at a motel when a thief stole her SUV.

It contained many of her personal belongings, including some precious rings given to her by her late husband.

The vehicle was later located and a city worker found one of the rings just a few blocks away from it.

“[I] put it in my work truck [and] didn’t think nothing of it,” said Ken Rafter who found the ring while looking for syringes. “And then watching the news, the ring looked familiar to the picture you had on there.”

That family ring was returned to Dickie but her other more sentimental rings, given to her by her late husband, have not been found.

She says she desperately wants them back.

Jason Klughart was arrested downtown on an unrelated matter and identified by police as the SUV thief, thanks to video surveillance.

Klughart pleaded guilty to stealing the SUV at his first court appearance last week.

The judge sentenced him to 262 days in jail followed by one year of probation. Klughart has numerous previous criminal convictions.
