Sooke Road shut down in Colwood after driver hits power pole
Submitted
Part of a tree and power lines came down after a driver struck a hydro pole in Colwood, April 29, 2022.

A driver crashed into a power pole, shutting down traffic on Sooke Road between Ridley Drive and Metchosin Road Friday afternoon.

The road had reopened to single-lane traffic in both directions at around 5:15 p.m., according to the City of Colwood.

A photo of the scene showed a vehicle with its front end up against a power pole on the northbound side of Sooke Road, with lines also down from the crash.

Officers were seen turning cars around at the intersection with Kelly Road.

There is no word yet on possible injuries, but a police officer on scene said the driver remained at the crash after it happened. Speed, alcohol and drugs have been ruled out as possible factors.

Some lanes of Sooke Road could remain closed up to 7:30 p.m., police estimated, as BC Hydro crews tended to the damaged power pole, which is at risk of falling.

The Sooke School District said some of its afternoon buses would be delayed because of the road closure.

This is a developing story. More to come.
