A 55-year-old Sooke man was killed when a utility trailer being towed on the Trans-Canada Highway near Revelstoke lost a tire, which struck him as he rode a motorcycle.

The man was riding a Harley Davidson on the highway about 34 kilometres west of Revelstoke on July 3 when it happened, according to RCMP, who were called to the scene at around 2:20 p.m.

Investigators have determined that a westbound Ford F350 pickup truck from Alberta was pulling a 16-foot single-axle utility trailer when suddenly, one of the trailer’s tires detached.

“The tire bounced into oncoming traffic narrowly missing an eastbound motorcycle but struck the driver of a second Harley Davidson motorcycle,” police said in a news release Tuesday.

Despite life-saving efforts from a passing doctor, visiting from Germany, as well as a nurse, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

A passenger on the bike suffered undisclosed injuries and was rushed to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.

The crash shut down a stretch of Highway 1 for hours as police investigated, gathering evidence and recovering the vehicles involved. BC Highway Patrol, the BC Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Program and the BC Coroners’ Service are all investigating the incident.

BC Highway Patrol Revelstoke is asking anyone with information about the crash, including those with possible dashcam video of the vehicles involved prior to the collision, to call them at 250-814-8173.
