Boat ‘total write-off’ following Tuesday blaze in Cowichan Bay

Boat parked in Cowichan Bay suffers serious damage following fire on Tuesday, July 5, 2022.

A boat is a “total write-off” following a Tuesday morning fire in Cowichan Bay.

Multiple fire crews were called to the blaze on Cherry Point Road at around 7:45 a.m. only to find the boat, which was parked in a driveway, engulfed in flames, Cowichan Bay Fire Chief Rob Grossman says.

It took firefighters about an hour and a half to get the flames under control, according to Grossman, who tells CHEK News one person was sent to hospital for light smoke inhalation.

He says the fire did cause some damage to the neighbouring house, with video footage showing the aftermath, which included a stretch of siding melted off due to the heat.

Dale Peebles sent in the footage captured by his firefighter son, Gavin, who was off-duty at the time. Dale says Gavin was in the area and stumbled across the fire after spotting “a lot of black smoke” spewing into the skies above.

At this time, Grossman says the cause remains under investigation and marks the fire department’s 105th call of the year. That’s on par with the number of reports usually received by early July.

CHEK News has reached out to BC Emergency Health Services (BCHS) for more information on the victim sent to hospital.
