Police say a 41-year-old man from Nanaimo is dead after a collision on Highway 4 between a dirt bike and a car.

Oceanside RCMP said at 11:23 a.m. on Oct. 21, police responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 4 in the eastbound lane near Koen Road.

Firefighters from the Coombs/Hilliers Volunteer Fire Department and BC Emergency Health Services paramedics also responded.

Police said the investigation revealed that an unlicensed off-road motorcycle (dirt bike) was being driven east on the eastbound shoulder of the highway.

The driver of the motorcycle then suddenly turned onto the highway directly in front of a car that was also being driven eastbound, police said.

The dirt bike operator, the 41-year-old man from Nanaimo died as a result of the collision.

The driver in the car (and lone occupant), a 61-year-old man from Port Alberni, was not injured and remained at the scene to speak with police, according to Oceanside RCMP. Speed and alcohol were not contributing factors in the collision, police said.

Police said traffic delays should be expected while the RCMP traffic analyst works to complete the scene investigation and crews clean up the debris.
