Saanich police say a 40-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with two sexual assaults.

Saanich police have arrested a 40-year-old man from Sidney in connection with two sexual assaults in Saanich last week.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 27, a 17-year-old girl reported a man making sexual advancements toward her, including unwanted touching, on a BC Transit bus in the area of the Royal Oak bus exchange.

Then on March 4, 2020, a 25-year-old woman reported a man assaulted her near a bus stop in the Quadra Street corridor. The woman said the man followed her off the bus and began to make unwanted sexual touching.

After the March 4 incident, police said they believed the two incidents were related.

On March 8, Saanich police, with help from Victoria police, arrested the 40-year-old suspect. Police are recommending charges of two counts of sexual assault. He has been released on conditions.

“We want to thank BC Transit and VicPD for their assistance. The women have been in contact with our detectives and offered various resources” Detective Sgt. Damian Kowalewich from Saanich police said in a statement.

Police have not released the name of the man as charges haven’t been sworn.

Correction: In the original release, Saanich police said the man had been charged. However, police have recommended charges but they haven’t been sworn by the Crown.
